Website:
I am a Japanese textiles designer focussing on Shibori resist dyeing, Katagami stencilling, Sashiko & Kogin embroidery & Boro mending. I work mostly with indigo but some natural dyes & silk dyes. My work is grounded in learning traditional methods & then reinventing them into my own forms & designs. I sell a range of repurposed vintage kimono fabrics & indigo dyed accessories & homewares.

Romor Designs Mokume bands indigo dyed Shibori scarf :
This fine Baptiste cotton scarf is patterned at each end with 10 bands of three closely spaced rows of finely stitched Shibori in a pattern known as Mokume or woodgrain. Each row os stitch is comprised of hundreds of tiny stitches carefully offset from the stitches in the adjacent row.

Romor Designs Arashi bamboo silk infinity loop scarf :
Arashi Shibori ("Storm" in Japanese) is a technique involving wrapping the fabric around a pole and binding tightly with thread whilst cross pleating the fabric by hand. Everything has to remain at tension and the fabric gets pushed down every few turns to compress it and form the resist.

Romor Designs Guntai ring apron :
Guntai (or "Military") shibori was traditionally used to decorate samurai soldiers clothes in ordered, repeating patterns. For this work I have subverted the form into a ring, where the nature of the process draws the indigo dye around to form a wreath pattern.
